Activity Overview
Despite its prevalence, insomnia is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. A recent poll found that only 4% of the population was treated for insomnia yet approximately one-third of the population suffers from insomnia symptoms (Doghramji PP, 2004 p23).
Treating insomnia can be a complex process. Psychological, behavioral, lifestyle, environmental, and physiological factors can all contribute to insomnia, so therapeutic strategies may focus on any or all of these areas (Winkelman JW, 2005 p7).
This activity will educate primary care physicians how to effectively treat patients for chronic insomnia.
